The piece became immensely popular soon after his death, thanks to its blend of familiar and new musical ideas. Ingenious and inventive throughout, the material has strikingly beautiful, tender and poignant passages mixed with more somber, formal sections. The 13 brief movements offer a profoundly moving experience. In the fifty years following Pergolesi's death, the Stabat Mater became the most often printed piece during that time. J.S. Bach used the work almost note for note with the German text in his ”Tilge, Höchster, meline Sünden”. A priest, music teacher and virtuoso violinist, Vivaldi composed many sacred works for the Ospedale, where he spent most of his career. Vivaldi wrote at least three settings of the hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo, whose words date probably from the 4th Century and which is an integral part of the Ordinary of the Mass. Two survive: RV 588 and RV 589. The RV 589 Gloria is the version we will present. The wonderfully sunny nature of the Gloria, with its distinctive melodies and rhythms, has made it the most famous of Vivaldi's choral pieces, and one of the best-loved works of the Baroque Era. For two centuries after Vivaldi's death, the Gloria lay forgotten until Alfredo Casella revived the RV589 version in 1939. Since that time, the Gloria has been performed and recorded countless times. He became a full-time composer in 1997, and has produced a large catalogue of music for all types of choirs which is published by Oxford University Press. Chilcott’s setting of Orlando Gibbons and Catullus is a re-working of Gibbons's celebrated seventeenth-century madrigal (of the same title) for five voices. Dolly Parton estimates that she has written close to 3,000 songs throughout her illustrious seven-decade career including Light of a Clear Blue Morning. As Parton has told interviewers over the years, the song came out of the pain from her break with her longtime musical and business partner at the time. His eight vocal cycles, instrumental works, art songs and series of sacred Latin motets are performed throughout the world and have been recorded on over two hundred CDs, including several that have received Grammy nominations. Lauridsen composed the requiem Lux Aeterna in 1997, the year his mother died. During the 2025/26 season, Morgan returned to American Bach as a soloist in their concert series "A Grand Tour," and performed Handel's Messiah with I Cantori di Carmel. She also performed in San Francisco Symphony's pre-concert talks for Holst's The Planets with Symphony violinist Chen Zhao, and Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with pianist Allegra Chapman. The 2015/16 Fulbright scholar to Finland has also headlined several concerts in Europe including performances at Helsinki’s Musiikkitalo, Finland’s National Opera House, and the Berlin Philharmonie. Through his performing and as a former mentor for ArtSmart, which provides free music and singing lessons to teenagers in underserved communities, Simon strives to build a more equitable world of empathy and understanding through music. There he was featured in the world premieres of Silent Night and The Grapes of Wrath, and the North American premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale. Eric has performed several principal roles with The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company and the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra. He has also appeared with Out of the Box Opera, The Minnesota Orchestra, Colorado Opera Festival, and numerous Mill City Summer Opera and Skylark Opera productions. Mr. Mellum was a winner of the Kenwood Chamber Orchestra Masters Concerto and Aria Competition, and has also appeared as a soloist with Rochester Orchestra, Linden Hills Chamber Orchestra, and Twin Cities Chamber Orchestra. Locally Mr. Mellum has been featured in productions with Opera San José, Pocket Opera and Lamplighters Music Theatre in San Francisco. In the 2024-25 season, she returned to San Francisco Opera as Warren's Wife in The Handmaid’s Tale, made debuts with Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera as Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, and West Bay Opera as Teresa in La sonnambula, and returned to Pocket Opera as Elmire in Tartuffe after making her debut as Nancy in Albert Herring in 2023. She has appeared as soprano soloist in numerous oratorio and concert works, including J. S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, and Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, among others. Equally at home in contemporary repertoire, Ms. House Steward made her Carnegie Hall debut performing the world premiere of two song cycles by New York–based composer Gerald Busby. In recital, she most notably collaborated for three years with renowned pianist John Wustman as part of his Schubert Song Recital Series. She has also presented recitals at the Neues Residenz and St. Mark’s Kapelle in Salzburg, Austria. Among her many honors, Ms. House Steward has received performance awards from the National Society of Arts and Letters, the National Opera Association, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Leni Fe Bland Foundation, and the Theodore Presser Foundation.
